AHIR vaig anar a...

Yesterday I went to see Wagner's 'Die Walküre' at Gran Teatre del Liceu of Barcelona.

_The Ring of the Nibelung is a cycle of four musical dramas with text and music by Richard Wagner, which has its central theme the possession of a magic ring, forged by the Nibelung Alberich, which grants anyone possessing it the power to rule the world. All of its inhabitants ─ gods, men and Nibelung ─ are overcome by the desire to possess the ring, except for the protagonist: Siegfried, a hero who is free from the gregarious servitude of power and gold. “The Ring of the Nibelung” – preceded by the prelude (Das Rheingold) – is the story of the origin (Die Walküre), the glory (Siegfried) and the defeat (Götterdämmerung) of this hero. This way, Wagner wanted to create a myth ─ like the great myths of Greek civilisation ─ that was not a mere anecdote but a fable on human nature with a universal and timeless value, and he based it on mediaeval epic texts (twelfth-thirteenth centuries) such as the “Song of the Nibelung” in order to create a genuinely German mythology.

_Die Walküre tells about Brünnilde's confrontation with his father, the god Wotan. He has decided to recover the Ring of Niebelung (symbol of the power of the Gods) by means of a hero belonging to the world of men, free and without contradictions that knows no fear or envy. This hero Siegfried is the result of incest between Siegmund and Siegliende.

_The Ring of the Nibelungs reminds us the fictional novel The Lord of the Rings, by JRR Tolkien, where everyone wants to own the ring. There is, at least, also a couple of scenes that remind us  other stories... one side the legend of King Arthur, because Siegmund (Die Walküre) is the only man who can get the sword from a place (there it was a rock, here is an ash). On the other hand, it also reminds us of the story of Sleeping Beauty (1679, Brothers Grimm, 1812), by Charles Perrault, where the asleep princess is 'retained' there by a forest of towering bushes, and here 'protected' by the flames, but in both cases awaiting the arrival of a brave knight.

AHIR vaig anar a...

Yestarday I went to the opening party of the summer season at top terrace of Gallery Hotel of Barcelona.

_Last years, many of the most categoruzed hotels have opened their rooftop terraces to all citizens as soon as the warm weather arrives. It seems, therefore, that summer season has began only when rooftop terraces open!

_Yesterday the rooftop terrace the Top, from Gallery Hotel of Barcelona celebrated its summer season opening party, one of the last terraces to get opened in the city (one year ago).

_Many of these rooftop terraces in the city have become spaces for relaxation while enjoying a cocktail or tasting good food with friends, listening to the music. Above all, they are perfect places to enjoy where high temperatures are sifted during warm summer evenings and nights!

_Garden season is full of life. Vegetable seeds that we planted in winter, which we were lucky to see them grow in spring, now they look very promising. AVUI m'agrada...

What today I like most is '320 Licht', a massive light projection from German creative studio Urbanscreen.

_‘320 Licht’ is massive light projection inside the cathedral-like interior of the 20,000 square meter Gasometer Oberhausen in west Germany. Urbanscreen utilized both the ceiling and 320 degrees of the interior space of this former gas tank to project a 22-minute loop of digital animation with 21 high-powered projectors.

_“This experience is based on the vastness of the Gasometer (...). We tried to work with that expression to make the space bigger and smaller, to deform it and to change its surface over and over while not exaggerating and overwriting the original effect of the room.” Sound designer Jonas Wiese.

_One of tourist hits in Helsinki for 2014, is a gunboat from the 18th century, at the fortress island of Suomenlinnawhich was rebuilt based on sketches by Swedish naval architect Frederik Henrik af Chapman.

_Equipped with two masts and 15 pairs of oars, the vessel has a deck 66 feet in longitude and fifteen feet in width. Armed with two 24-pound cannons and four rail-guns, the gun sloop had a crucial role in the War of Gustav III (1788 – 1790) Svensksund sea battle that took place in the Gulf of Finland in 1790, ending up in a glorious victory of Sweden’s naval forces. All navies of the sailing era kept a number of gunboats on hand. Gunboats saw extensive use in the Baltic Sea during the late 18th century as they were well-suited for the extensive coastal skerries and archipelagoes of Sweden, Finland and Russia.

_Gunboats are a type of vessel designed by Mallorcan Antoni Barceló i Pont de la Terra (1717-1797, Lieutenant General of the Spanish Royal Armada) at the beginning of the eighteenth century, during the third siege of Gibraltar in the Seven Years' War. It was commonly used in lakes, rivers, and especially in coastal areas. A gunboat is a naval watercraft designed for the express purpose of carrying one or more guns to bombard coastal targets, as opposed to those military craft designed for naval warfare, or for ferrying troops or supplies.

_The project began in the fall of 2010 and the vessel will be set to sea in the spring of 2013. The ship-building overseers cofounded by the Ehrensvärd Foundation and the Sveaborg Shipyards Foundation have builded a gun sloop in Sveaborg. The goals of the undertaking were to employ and educate young people who are interested in building wooden ships, to maintain and rekindle the traditional craftsmanship of wooden ship building, and to develop and render more vivid the history and tourism of the Sveaborg fortress (Suomenlinna).

_The gunboat is currently being finished in the Suomenlinna dockyard. It will be tested for guided tours this summer already, but regular tours will probably begin in 2015.

_'Ravintola päivä' (Restaurant Day) is a food carnival created by thousands of people organizing and visiting one-day restaurants worldwide. It will be held tomorrow.

src Visit Helsinki
_Four times a year local residents in Helsinki get together to have fun with food. Restaurant Day represents urban culture at its best... anyone can open a popup restaurant for the day. Popular places include parks, street corners and courtyards, as well as private apartments and offices in wintertime. Imagination is the limit for a unique restaurant concept and menu. The inspiration behind the event is to share restaurant experiences, have fun and enjoy the community.

_Timo Santala, one of the founders of the event, cannot get over the enthusiasm that Restaurant Day has generated. “People really let their imaginations go wild, creating something that has never been tried before in terms of the food or the concept. The dedication and joy of the participants is wonderful, as is the way in which people get involved and get to know each other around the table.”

src Visit Helsinki
_Last year, a total of 1702 One Day Restaurants opened up at least in 30 countries.  1097 of those restaurants opened in Finland (527 in Helsinki) and yes, it was and will always be for the fun and food of it.

src Restaurant Day (St Petersburg, Russia)
_The idea behind Restaurant Day arose from frustration over all the bureaucracy involved in running a restaurant. The first Restaurant Day was held on 21 May 2011 and featured 45 popup restaurants in 13 locations around Finland. The second Restaurant Day was held the following August and featured around 200 popup restaurants in four different countries. Actually, this is a good way to make citizens aware that they are the true owners and inhabitants of their cities, and they are the ones that can make where they live a better place.

src Visit Helsinki
_The phenomenon has been good for the restaurant business on the whole. “Restaurant Day encourages people to go out to eat. Even on Restaurant Day itself, normal restaurants are packed! It also allows new restaurants to test their wings.

src overdose
_In addition to the Finland Prize, Restaurant Day was named Cultural Act of the Year 2011, Food Phenomenon of the Year 2011 by Gloria Food and Wine magazine, and Best Event 2012 in the Best of Helsinki competition. The creators of the event are also pleased that the Mayor of Helsinki Jussi Pajunen has noted that the city’s organisation has a lot to learn from Restaurant Day.

_It's also a good opportunity for tourists to participate in the activities of the city! Next Restaurant Days are August 18 and November 16.

_Since 2004, Brooklyn-based contemporary artist Rachel Sussman has been taking pictures of the oldest continuously living organisms on Earth. This includes plants like Pando, the “Trembling Giant,” a colony of aspens in Utah with a massive underground root system estimated to be around 80,000 years old.

_Traveling around the world through the coldest and the warmest places on earth, Sussman has managed to immortalize Sussman true natural wonders, although  some of them have currently disappeared... this is the realm of life where time is measured in millennia, and where despite such astonishing longevity, ecosystems are now threatened due to climate change and human encroachment.

_Sussman’s 124 photographs have now been gathered together for the first time in The Oldest Living Things in the World, a new book, part art and part science, published by the University of Chicago Press. 'I approach my subjects as individuals of whom I’m making portraits in order to facilitate an anthropomorphic connection to a deep timescale otherwise too physiologically challenging for our brain to internalize.', Rachel Sussman says.

_Although, for now, it seems almost impossible to get this desire be fulfilled, I guess we have to keep dreaming and think that many of these creatures will manage how to survive to the entire human race.

_Helsinki is, without any doubt, a maritime city. He lives completely towards the Baltic Sea, and it has nearly 100km of coastline. Some people called Helsinki 'the daughter of the Baltic Sea'.

_One of the most important sculptures of the city is 'Havis Amanda' at the Market Square, next to the harbor, carved by Finnish sculptor Ville Valgreen in 1906 in Paris. Havis Amanda is a mermaid that represents the city of Helsinki rebirthing.

_Helsinki is surrounded by more than 300 islands. Major islands include Seurasaari (ethnological open-air museum), Lauttasaari and Korkeasaari (the zoo of the city). Also the islands Santahamina (military area) and Pihlajasaari (converted into recreational area, which has one of the two official nudist beaches in the country). Suomenlinna fortress is also one of the visitng spots of the city.

_This summer visitors to Helsinki will be able to visit a new recreational island destination in the archipelago. Lonna will open to the public on 17 May.

_In the 1880s it was used by the Russian Navy to store mines, in the 1920s it was used as a base for clearing mines, and in the post-war period ships were demagnetised there. The previously closed military island has 7 buildings that are being renovated gradually. The final plan will be built on the island restaurant, meeting rooms, a gallery, a picnic area and barbeque, a spa and a common bath. The goal is to get the island into its final form in 2016. During the summer 2014 on the island of works at least in a restaurant, conference and retail facilities, as well as some outdoor areas. You can get to Lonna in summertime aboard the JT-Line waterbus to Suomenlinna that departs from the Market Square and stops at Lonna on the way to Suomenlinna.
