L'artista afincada a Nova York Rachel Sussman ha estat fotografiant des de fa deu anys especimens i ecosistemes que viuen al nostre planeta des de fa milers i milers d'anys, com Pando, el "Tremolor Gegant", una colònia d'àlbers a Utah amb un sistema d'arrels subterrànies massiva estimada en uns 80.000 anys d'antiguitat. _Since 2004, Brooklyn-based contemporary artist Rachel Sussman has been taking pictures of the oldest continuously living organisms on Earth. This includes plants like Pando, the “Trembling Giant,” a colony of aspens in Utah with a massive underground root system estimated to be around 80,000 years old.
Viatjant a través del món, passant pels punts més freds i pels més càlids de la terra, Sussman ha aconseguit immortalitzar veritables meravelles naturals, algunes d'elles, però, actualment ja desaparegudes del tot... plantes l'edat de les quals es compta amb mil·lennis, però que el canvi climàtic i la presència humana n'ha alterat els ecosistemes que les mantenien encara vives. _Traveling around the world through the coldest and the warmest places on earth, Sussman has managed to immortalize Sussman true natural wonders, although some of them have currently disappeared... this is the realm of life where time is measured in millennia, and where despite such astonishing longevity, ecosystems are now threatened due to climate change and human encroachment.
Tot aquest material que inclou 124 fotografies s'ha recollit en un llibre, part art, part ciència... The Oldest Living Things in the World. M'acosto als meus subjectes com a individus, dels quals estic fent retrats a fi de facilitar una connexió antropomòrfica a una escala de temps d'una altra manera fisiològicament massa difícil d'internalitzar per al nostre cervell, explica Rachel Sussman. _Sussman’s 124 photographs have now been gathered together for the first time in The Oldest Living Things in the World, a new book, part art and part science, published by the University of Chicago Press. 'I approach my subjects as individuals of whom I’m making portraits in order to facilitate an anthropomorphic connection to a deep timescale otherwise too physiologically challenging for our brain to internalize.', Rachel Sussman says.
Tot i que, ara com ara, sembla un desig gairebé impossible de veure's realitzat, suposo que hem de conservar l'esperança que molts d'aquests éssers vius, que tot i els seus mil·lennis a les espatlles potser encara no hagin arribat a la seva majoria d'edat, sobreviuran a l'espècie humana. _Although, for now, it seems almost impossible to get this desire be fulfilled, I guess we have to keep dreaming and think that many of these creatures will manage how to survive to the entire human race.
