Des dels anys vuitanta s'intenta, arreu d'Europa, recuperar els espais públics de les ciutats i recuperar la capacitat d'aquests àmbits per acollir activitat i diversitat, millorar les relacions, la comunicació, la sociabilitat dels ciutadans, etc. El Premi Europeu de l’Espai Públic Urbà és una iniciativa del Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB) que, arran de la seva exposició «La reconquesta d’Europa» (1999), va decidir ser testimoni del procés de rehabilitació dels espais públics que té lloc en moltes ciutats europees. _Since the eighties, efforts have been made all over Europe to recover public spaces in cities and  recover the capacity of these milieus as venues for activity and diversity, improving the relations, communication, and sociability of citizens. The European Prize for Urban Public Space is an initiative of the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona (CCCB). It was established following the exhibition “The Reconquest of Europe”, which was held in the CCCB in 1999, in order to offer testimony to the process of rehabilitation of public spaces that has been occurring in many European cities.

El Premi és l’únic a Europa que reconeix i promou un espai alhora públic (obert i d’accés universal) i urbà i posa de relleu el caràcter relacional i cívic de l’espai típicament urbà. _This Prize (the only one of its kind in Europe) is distinctive in both recognising and promoting a public space that is at once public (open and universally accessible) and urban.

Amb el temps, diverses institucions europees s’han unit al projecte, que actualment ja és coorganitzat per The Architecture Foundation (Londres), l’Architekturzentrum Wien (Viena), la Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine (París), el Museum of Finnish Architecture (Hèlsinki), el Deutsches Architekturmuseum (Frankfurt) i el Museum of Architecture and Design (Ljubljana). En l’edició del 2012, el Premi va rebre ja 347 projectes de 36 països europeus convertint-se així en un termòmetre de les principals preocupacions de les ciutats europees. _In the years since its inception, a number of European institutions have joined the project, which is presently co-organised by The Architecture Foundation (London), the Architekturzentrum Wien (Vienna), the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine (Paris), the Museum of Finnish Architecture (Helsinki), the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (Frankfurt) and the Museum of Architecture and Desing (Ljubljana). In 2012, 347 projects from 36 European countries  were entered for the Prize, which might therefore be seen as a gauge of the main concerns of European cities.

La primera característica del Premi és que es concedeix alhora a l’arquitecte i a l’administració pública (ajuntament o representant polític) que ha pres la decisió política de dur a terme la intervenció i tot sovint també en garanteix el finançament. El caràcter honorífic del Premi és la seva segona singularitat. La tercera és que el Premi apunta, sobretot, a les intervencions que pretenen abans que res millorar les condicions de vida dels ciutadans. La quarta singularitat del Premi és la seva vocació clarament europea. _The Prize has many distinguishing features. First, it is conceded to both the architect and the branch of public administration (council or political representative) that has taken the political decision to effectuate the intervention and, frequently, to guarantee its funding as well. Second, is the honorific nature of the Prize. Third, the Prize is concerned, above all, with interventions that aims to improve the lives of citizens. Fourth, the Prize is distinctive in its clearly European vocation.

Els resultats de la vuitena edició del Premi Europeu de l’Espai Públic Urbà es van conèixer durant la cerimònia celebrada el 25 d'abril al Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona. El jurat va atorgar, d’entre els 25 finalistes, dos premis ex aequo i quatre mencions especials. Una d'aquestes mencions especials va ser per a Baana, un corredor per a ciclistes i vianants en un antic congost ferroviari (Hèlsinki, 2012). Una altar menció especial va recaure a la intervenció feta al buit que va deixar l'enderroc de l'antic teatre La Lira a Ripoll. Barcelona hi és finalista amb el Nou Mercat dels Encants, però també d'altres projectes a l'Estat espanyol ha estate finalistes i, fins i tot, el project La Vall Trenada d'Elx ha compatriot el primer premie ex aequo amb la Reforma del Port Vell de Marsella. _The results of the eighth award of the European Prize for Urban Public Space have been made public following the prize-giving ceremony on 25 April at the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona. The Prize’s international jury decided on 25 finalists, amongst which it has awarded two ex aequo prizes and four Special Mentions. One of these special mentions went to 'Baana', a pedestrian and bicycle in an old deep railway corridor(Helsinki, 2012). A special mention went to the intervention made ​​in the empty space left when the old theatre 'La Lira' of Ripoll (Catalonia) was demolished. Barcelona was finalist with the 'New 'Els Encants' Flea Market', but also other projects in Spain were finalists. Even the project 'The Braided Valley' of Elche fellow ex aequo with the first reward 'Renovation of the Old Port' of Marseille.

Tan allunyades, i alhora tan properes. Una vegada més hem aconseguit enllaçar ambdues ciutats... Barcelona, i Hèlsinki. I aquest és l'objectiu determinant que s'ha anat definint al nostre blog... el de buscar, i trobar, elements que, per semblança o bé per diferència, puguin unir ambdós mons. Per cert, demà el blog, com cada divendres, viatjarà... a Hèlsinki. Però aquesta vegada no ho farà de manera ficticia, sinó que serà uns dies a Finlàndia! _So far and yet so close. Once again we have managed to link both cities... Barcelona and Helsinki. And that is the goal that has been crucial to our blog... defining similarities or differences to join both worlds. By the way, the blog is traveling tomorrow to Helsinki, not in a fictional way, but for real!
