La Desert House, obra de l'arquitecte Kendric Bangs Kellogg (1934) i interiors del dissenyador John Vurguin, es troba al vessant d'un turó rocós del desert de Califòrnia, prop de Joshua Tree National Park. _Perched on the slope of a rocky hill in the Californian desert, not far from Joshua Tree National Park, appears the Desert House by American architect Kendrick Bangs Kellogg and interiors by John Vurguin.

La seva estructura exterior, feta de lloses de formigó perfectament integrades amb el seu entorn, recorda les fulles d'algun estrany vegetal o, fins i tot, la closca d'un armadillo. _Its impressive exterior form which is impeccably composed and sophisticatedly embedded within its natural surroundings consists of numerous cast-concrete slabs, which seem to cover the interior like the foliage of an otherworldly tree, or even the back of an armadillo.

Finalitzada a principis de la dècada dels 2000's (la construcció es va iniciar l'any 1988, i la seca finalización estaba prevista per al 1993), va ser un encàrrec de l'artista Bev Doolittle i el seu marit, que va donar carta blanca a l'arquitecte. Per a fer veritable arquitectura creativa necessites clients amb prou visió i imaginació per extreure'n el màxim de l'espai donat. Els grans clients són aquells que deixen un ampli marge a l'arquitecte per a donar-los allò que no sabien que volien fins que ho tenen. Han de còrrer riscos per a ser únics!, diu Kellogg. _Completed in the early 2000‘s after over a decade in the making, the house was commissioned by artist Bev Doolittle and her husband, who were fascinated by Kellogg’s unique aesthetic and gave him a carte blanche for the project. 'To realize truly creative architecture you need clients with the vision and imagination to make the most of any site. Great clients are those who allow and architect the latitude to give them what they didn't know they wanted until they have it! They are willing to risk being unique', says Kellogg.

El dissenyador John Vurguin ha trigat deu anys a completar-ne l'interior. Tot s'ha dissenyat i construit expressament per a aquesta casa. Ara és un espai càlid i íntim, de formes orgàniques que flueixen i embolcallen suaument els seus habitants. La llum entra per les grans obertures que separen els panells de formigó. Les textures proporcionen el toc i la sensació de desert ja que els materials van ser acuradament seleccionats del mateix desert. La propietat destaca les formes masculines i femenines que són el segell distintiu de l'arquitectura orgànica. _It took Vurgin, who then set about designing and building pretty much everything in the house (even the fence which surrounds the property is custom-made with spiky iron elements that look like fishbone structures), almost a decade to create the interiors and other elements of the house. The interior is a warm intimate space of flowing organic shapes wrapping gently around its inhabitants. Light enters through continuous openings that separate the towering concrete panels. The textures provide the touch and feel of the desert as materials were meticulously selected from the desert. The property highlights the masculine and feminine forms that are the hallmark of organic architecture.

L'arquitectura de Kellogg no encaixa exactament en la mateixa categoria que Frank Lloyd Wright, Bruce Goff, Bart Prince, o d'altres arquitectes orgànics.
