Today, February 28, is Kalevala Day in Finland, or Finnish Culture Day. _Avui, 28 de febrer, és el Dia del Kalevala a Finlàndia, o Dia de la Cultura Finlandesa.

On February 28, 1835, after years of research, Lönnrot signed the preface to the first edition of The Kalevala, the Finnish national epic. The version most commonly known today was first published in 1849. _El 28 de febrer de 1835 Elias Lönnrot, el recopilador del Kalevala, l'epopeia nacional de Finlàndia, va firmar el pròleg de la primera versió d'aquest poema, tot i que la versió més coneguda és la segona de 1849.

It is regarded as the national epic of Karelia and Finland and is one of the most significant works of Finnish literature. The Kalevala played an instrumental role in the development of the Finnish national identity, the intensification of Finland's language strife and the growing sense of nationality that ultimately led to Finland's independence from Russia in 1917. Lönnrot and his assistants traveled throughout the country, asking people to tell them whatever they could remember about the folklore surrounding Kalevala, the 'Land of Heroes'. _L'aparició d'aquesta obra va ser molt important perquè suposava el redescobriment de la cultura del poble de Finlàndia pels mateixos finlandesos. El Kalevala és una epopeia tradicional basada en la poesia oral transmesa de generació en generació, i recuperada per Lönnrot en els seus viatges pels pobles d'aquest país.

The Kalevala is thus the basis of the Finnish native culture. It has inspired, and keep on doing so, a multitude of artists. The celebration of February 28 as the Day of the Finnish Culture began in the early '60s of the nineteenth century by a group of students. In 1920 flags began to wave around to celebrate it, and from 1978 it is an official Day. _El Kalevala és, doncs, la base de la cultura autòctona finlandesa. Ha inspirat, i segueix fent-ho, a multitud d'artistes. A més, la celebració del 28 de febrer com a Dia de la Cultura ja va veure els inicis a la dècada dels anys '60 del segle XIX per un grup d'estudiants. Cap a 1920 les banderes onejaven per a celebrar-ho, i a partir de 1978 es va oficialitzar aquest costum.

The urban event Lux Helsinki offers experiences for all the senses during the darkest time of the year. Visually spectacular light installations have enticed people to spend time in the wintry outdoors of Helsinki. _La filosofia inicial de Lux Helsinki és la de dur llum en els dies més foscos de l'any. A  més, és una bona manera de fer sortir la gent al carrer en una època tan freda! 

"The 10th annual Lux Helsinki light festival will take place from Saturday 6 January to Wednesday 10 January 2018. Lux Helsinki is illuminated with brilliant light installations at the impressive district of Kaartinkaupunki. "The streets, squares and buildings will be momentarily take on new forms as the festival breathes mew life into the wintry city" (Ilkka Paloniemi, artistic director). The starting point and the first artwork are located in Esplanade Park, behind Svenska Teatern. _El 10è festival anual de llum Lux Hèlsinki tindrà lloc des del dissabte 6 de gener al dimecres 10 de gener de 2018. Lux Hèlsinki ha il·luminat edificis històrics del centre de la ciutat, sobretot del districte de Kaartinkaupunki. La ruta d'enguany surt del parc d'Esplanadi, darrere del Svenska Teatern. "Els carrers, les places i els edificis adoptaran noves formes durant el temps que el Festival insufli nova vida a la ciutat hivernal" (Ilkka Paloniemi, director artístic).

Since March, Happy Guide Helsinki has opened a new tour of the city. A new tour that will bring us to know one of the most echoed people in the graphic and popular culture of the twentieth century in Finland, and known throughout the world, especially in the Gay community cultural life: Tom of Finland; or, actually, Touko Laaksonen. Tom of Finland Experince Tour. And we did sign up for it! _Des del mes de març d'aquest any, Happy Guide Helsinki ha inaugurat un nou tour per la ciutat. Un nou tour que ens portarà a conèixer un dels personatges amb més ressò de la cultura gràfica i popular del segle XX a Finlàndia, i coneguda arreu del món, sobretot en l'àmbit cultural de la comunitat Gay: Tom of Finland; o, més ben dit, Touko Laaksonen. Tom of Finland Experince Tour. I nosaltres l'hem fet!

 

 

Tom of Finland Experience brings alive the streets once walked by Touko Laaksonen, more known for his international artist name, Tom of Finland, at a time when in some of the living and hidden layers of the city there could be found (in some times, clandestine and furtive) relationships between men! _Tom of Finland Experience dóna vida als carrers que en altres temps van veure caminar Touko Laaksonen, més conegut com a Tom of Finland, en un moment en què en alguna de les capes vives i amagades de la ciutat hi havia trobades (en algunes èpoques, clandestines i furtives) entre homes!

Touko Laaksonen's alias Tom of Finland has become an international gay culture icon during the years. Participants will get to know how for example a stamp decorated with his art became the most sold stamp ever in Finland? And also Touko the man: how life was very different for a gay man during the Second World War and decades after? This walk gets participants to places no one would have never imagined to have a secret meaning at all and that today they are completely alive spots of the daily life of the citizens of Helsinki. _L'àlies de Touko Laaksonen, Tom de Finlàndia, s'ha convertit en una icona de la cultura Gai internacional amb el pas del temps. Els participants de l'experiència tindran l'oportunitat de saber com, per exemple, segells decorats amb les seves obres s'han convertit en els segells més venuts mai a Finlàndia? I també Touko l'home: com de diferent era la vida per a un homosexual durant la Segona Guerra Mundial i durant moltes dècades després? Aquest passeig duu als participants a llocs on mai ningú hauria pensat que haguessin tingut una altra vida secreta i que avui són centres completament vitals de la vida diària dels ciutadans d'Hèlsinki.

 

Tom of Finland Experience starts with a multimedia show including videos and images of Tom / Touko and his years in Helsinki and with rising toast at Klaus K hotel where the experience starts for this unique liberal Finnish artist while admiring his work and life as audiovisual experience. You'll know there why this place has a meaning in Touko's life. After that, participants will walk the streets of Helsinki to see where Touko lived and visiting places once clandestine meeting places for gay community, now representing the accepting and liberal change in Finnish society. And in the end we give you a hot taste of Tom!  _Tom of Finland Experience comença amb un espectacle multimèdia incloent vídeos i imatges de Tom / Touko i els seus anys a Hèlsinki, i posteriorment amb un brindis a l'hotel Klaus K, perquè és un dels llocs relacionats en la vida del dibuixant. Ja us explicaran el per què. Després d'això, els participants caminaran pels carrers d'Hèlsinki i passaran per edificis on Touko va viure, o d'altres que una vegada van ser els llocs de reunió per a la comunitat gai clandestina, i que ara ja representen el canvi en l'acceptació i liberalització de la societat finlandesa.

Finnish photographer Ola Kolehmainen is the subject of an exhibition that can be seen in Galeria Senda of Barcelona. An exhibition entitled 'Sketches of Spain'. In his work, the artist uses architecture as a starting point and inspiration to create abstract compositions, influenced by minimalism in large format photographs. _El fotògraf finlandés Ola Kolehmainen és el protagonista d'una exposició que es pot veure fins aquest proper dissabte 18 de març a la galeria Senda de Barcelona. Una mostra que es titula Sketches of Spain. A la seva obra, l’artista fa servir l’arquitectura com a punt de partida i inspiració per a crear composicions abstractes, influenciades pel minimalisme en fotografies de gran format.

In 'Sketches of Spain', the artist makes a selection of photographs which were taken for ten years in his constant visits to Spain. The exhibition not only reflects the particular vision of Kolehmainen of works by Bofill, Mies van der Rohe or Ambasz, but also mutual influence between artists and architects. _A Sketches of Spain, l’artista fa una selecció de fotografies que ha capturat durant deu anys en les seves visites constants a Espanya. L’exposició no només reflecteix la visió particular de Kolehmainen d’obres de Bofill, Mies van der Rohe o Ambasz, sinó també la influencia mútua entre artistes i arquitectes.

For the artist, Mies van der Rohe has been the key in his career from the beginning. In addition to his undoubted place in the history of architecture, Mies van der Rohe Pavilion has been a constant source of inspiration for Kolehmainen. Kolehmainen's photographies are the result of an exhaustive study of light and plans, relying solely on natural light or artificial light existing in the building. It is known construction and the relationship that arises between light, shadows and reflections to create pictures on 'abstraction frees the building.' _Per a l’artista, Mies van der Rohe ha estat clau en la seva carrera professional des dels inicis. A més del seu lloc indubtable en la història de l’arquitectura, el Pabelló Mies van der Rohe ha estat font constant d’inspiració per a Kolehmainen. Les fotografies de Kolehmainen són el resultat d’un estudi exhaustiu de la llum i els plans, basant-se únicament en la llum natural i la llum artificial que ja existeix a l’edifici. Es tracta de conèixer la construcció i la relació que sorgeix entre llums, ombres, i reflexos per crear fotografies on l’abstracció allibera l’edifici.

The artist uses architecture as a raw material for his purely abstract work, but transformed. _L’artista fa servir la seva arquitectura com a matèria primera de la seva obra purament abstracta, però la transforma.

"The 9th annual Lux Helsinki light festival has taken place from Thursday 5 January to Monday 9 January 2017. Lux Helsinki has illuminated historical buildings in the city centre and dark courtyards, leading festival-goers to the idyllic quarters of the Kruununhaka district. The new route started from the Market Square and followed Mariankatu into Kruununhaka, the courtyard of the University of Helsinki’s Topelia building and the courtyard of the National Library before returning to the Market Square. The focal point of the festival has been Helsinki Cathedral, which has been illuminated on all four sides." _El 9è festival anual de llum Lux Hèlsinki ha tingut lloc des del passat dijous 5 de gener al dilluns 9 de gener de 2017. Lux Hèlsinki ha il·luminat edificis històrics del centre de la ciutat i foscos patis dels idíl·lics barris del districte de Kruununhaka. La ruta d'enguany sortia de Kaupatori per continuar cap a Mariankatu a Kruununhaka, el pati de la Universitat de l'edifici Topelia d'Hèlsinki i el pati de la Biblioteca Nacional abans de tornar a la plaça del mercat. El punt focal del festival ha estat la catedral d'Hèlsinki, que ha estat il·luminada pels quatre costats.

AVUI m'agrada... (tenint en compte que ja ha començat el compte enrere cap a Nadal) un element decoratiu de les festes anomenat himmeli.

What today I like most is something Finnish called himmeli.

'Himmel' is a highly valued and beloved Christmas decorations in Finland, made of straw tied straws. Made of hundreds or even thousands of pieces of straw. Exist in various shapes and sizes. Traditionally 'Himmel' hung above the dining table, where it remained until the summer solstice, to ensure that the rye harvest the following year were abundant. _El himmeli és una molt valorada i estimada decoració de Nadal a Finlàndia, feta de canyetes de palla lligades. Fetes de centenars, o fins i tot milers, de peces de palla. N'existeixen de diverses formes i mides. Tradicionalment el himmeli es penjava damunt de la taula del menjador, on s'hi quedaven fins al solstici d'estiu, per a garantir que la collita de sègol de l'any següent fos abundant.

Combines elements of geometry and architecture into graceful patterns and shadows. Although the root of the word “himmeli” is Germanic (in Swedish and German himmel means “sky” or “heaven”) and different versions of this straw mobile can be found in other Nordic countries, the 'himmeli' is considered the quintessential traditional Finnish Christmas decoration. _Formalment combina elements de la geometria i l'arquitectura en patrons i ombres gracioses. I encara que l'origen de la paraula himmeli és germànic (himmeli en suec i alemany significa cel), i les diferents versions d'aquest mòbil de palla es poden trobar en altres països nòrdics, el himmeli és considerat la quinta essència de les tradicions nadalenques a Finlàndia.

It is widely thought that best 'himmelis' are made out of rye, the grain with the longest and sturdiest stems. A well-kept 'himmeli' can last up to a hundred years. In modern interpretations, the materials vary from plywood to paper and even plastic straws. _Els millors himmelis estan fets de sègol, i ben guardat diuen que pot durar fins a cent anys. En les versions modernes, els materials varien des del contraxapat de paper a les palletes de plàstic.

Himmeli maker Eija Koski’s childhood memories go back to her aunt’s farmhouse in Finland’s Northern Savo region, where a himmeli was always on display for Christmas. “I remember how I used to stare at the himmeli slowly swaying with the draft while the adults were just talking,” says Koski. “I became enchanted by it!”. _Eija Koski, fabricant de himmelies, recorda la seva infància a la granja de la seva tia, a la regió nord de Savo, on sempre hi havia un himmeli per Nadal. Recordo que jo solia mirar el himmeli balancejant lentament, mentre que els adults estaven parlant, diu Koski. Em quedava encantada!

According to Koski, the 'himmeli' boom is part of the slow movement. “I think people are looking to reconnect with their heritage,” she says. “Artisanal handicrafts are becoming more popular.”  _Segons Koski, l'auge del himmeli forma part de les noves tendències slow movement. Crec que la gent està buscant per tornar a connectar amb la seva herència", diu ella. "L'artesania torna a ser cada vegada més popular.

AVUI m'agrada...

AVUI m'agrada...en els paisatges finlandesos del fotògraf Christoffer Relander capturats en pots de vidre.

What today we like most are bottled Finnish landscapes captured with double-exposure photography by Christoffer Relander.

Photographer Christoffer Relander utilizes mason jars as vessels to capture the environments that surrounded him during his childhood in Finland. The project, Jarred & Displaced, utilizes double exposures shot on medium format film to combine pristine images of jars with black and white landscapes, collecting scenes shot within forests, neighborhoods, and on top of steep ridges. Each of the images is completely analog as Relander decided to eschew all digital processes for the series. _El fotògraf Christoffer Relander utilitza pots de vidre com a recipients per capturar els ambients que el van envoltar durant la seva infància a Finlàndia. El projecte, Jarred & Displaced, utilitza dobles exposicions en pel·lícula de format mitjà per combinar imatges de flascons amb paisatges en blanc i negre, recollint escenes gravades en els boscos, els barris, i als pics costeruts. Cadascuna de les imatges és totalment analògica. Relander va voler deixar enrere qualsevol tipus de procés digital.
 

“With analog multiple exposures I’m able to manipulate my photographs in-camera,” said Relander. _Amb múltiples exposicions sóc capaç de manipular les meves fotografies a la càmera (Relander).
