Ja arriben els Reis Mags d'Orient! Ja són aquí! Seguint l'estrella d'orient, arribaran a tots els pobles i ciutats de la nostra terra per a dur-nos regals a tots! A tots aquells que ens hem portat més o menys bé durant l'any, és clar! Quins nervis! Ara ja són... molt a prop... justament per aquí...

The Cavalcade of Magi is a traditional parade of kings coaches, practically in all Spanish cities and also in some cities and towns in Mexico. TheMagi (of which tradition holds there were three: Melchior, Gaspar, and Baltasar) ride through the streets, as their page boys throw candies to children. It is celebrated every January 5 (the day preceding the feast of Epiphany) in the evening. When the night comes the children must go to bed early after cleaning their shoes and the following morning they have the gifts of the Magi that they have requested before in a letter. According to this tradition, the children who have behaved badly during the last year receive coal rather than candy, though (as in the case of Santa Claus) this is not a frequent occurrence. They might get coal candy, though.

The cavalcade of Alcoy is the oldest in the world and is a major draw of international tourism for Spain.

In Poland the first Cavalcade took place in 2009.

Però... i a Finlàndia? Celebren els Reis a Finlàndia?

Finlàndia no celebra el dia de Reis com ho fem aquí... amb cavalcades, i regals... però sí que hi ha alguna cosa relacionada amb els Reis Mags... Tiernapojat. Sembla ser que es tracta d'una tradició que, a Finlàndia (perquè celebracions similars es troben per tot el nord d'Europa) podria haver nascut a la ciutat d'Oulu. Els estudiants, que després de les festes ja anaven escassos de diners, es disfressaven i representaven una obra d'origens medievals. Ho feien mentre anaven de casa en casa, formant una espècies de cavalcada. Després de cada representació es demanava una donació al públic. I és la història dels Reis Mags i la seva trobada amb el rei Herodes i el nen Jesús la que representen. També s'hi inclouen algunes cançons de Nadal i una cançó de lloança al Tsar Alexandre.

Els personatges de l'obra són Herodes, el Rei dels Moros (que duu la cara pintada de negre), Knihti i Mänkki. Tots execepte Mänkki, que es el portador de l'estrella (i de les notícies del naixament de Jesús), duen espases.

En l'obra, que s'explica amb el dialecte arcaic d'Oulu, hi veiem la trobada entre Herodes i el Rei dels Moros, i la conversa sobre els tres Reis Mags, així com l'ordre d'Herodes de matar a tots els nens acabats de néixer de la ciutat.

The Star boys' singing procession (Tiernapojat), also known as "Epiphany singers", has children and young people walking about with a movable star on a rod and often wearing crowns and dressed in clothes to resemble the Three Magi (variously also known as Three Kings, Three Wise Man). The singing procession and the folk drama had its roots in an old medieval ecclesiastical play, centred on the Biblical Magi of the Christmas story in the Gospel of Matthew (Mt 2,1-28), appropriate to Epiphany. The liturgical drama developed from the 16th century on, as it was performed by cathedral schoolboys, to become a more secular mystery drama, containing also some ordinary Christmas songs and carols. The singing procession and play was usually observed each year during the period between 27 December and 6 January (the feast of the Epiphany). In Finland, a version of the Star boys' procession originating in the city of Oulu, a musical play known as Tiernapojat, has become established as a cherished Christmas tradition nationwide. The Tiernapojat show is a staple of Christmas festivities in schools, kindergartens, and elsewhere, and it is broadcast every Christmas on radio and television. The Finnish version contains non-biblical elements such as king Herod vanquishing the "king of the Moors", and a short song of praise to Tsar Alexander.

It has just started what is called in Finland 'Kaamos', the Polar Night. For a couple of months, especially in the northern part of the country, in Lapland, there will not be light for about 51 days. This does not mean that the darkness is absolute because at noon there is always a slight twilight, always with the permission of the clouds. It is a difficult time for the physical and mental health of the people. _Tot just acaba de començar el que a Finlàndia reb el nom de Kaamos, la Nit polar. Durant un parell de mesos, sobretot a la part més septentrional del país, a la Lapònia, no es veurà el sol en gairebé 51 dies. Això no vol dir que l'obscuritat sigui absoluta perquè cap al migdia sempre hi ha un lleuger crepúscle, si els núvols ho permeten. És una època complicada per a la salut física i mental de la gent.

This is therefore a good time to see the famous Northern Lights and if you are lucky, listen to their sounds. _Aquest és, doncs, un bon moment per a poder observar les famoses Aurores Boreals i, si hi ha sort, escoltar-ne els seus sons.

Today... let's talk about food, because today is, in Finland, the day of korvapuusti (korvapuustipäivää). But... what's 'korvapuusti'? Korvapuusti is one of the most traditional products of Finland! _Avui... una mica de gastronomia, perquè avui és, a Finlàndia, el dia del korvapuusti (korvapuustipäivää).  Però... què és el korvapuusti? El korvapuusti és un dels productes de rebosteria més tradicionals de Finlàndia!

Korvapuusti translates into “slapped ears” in English but they are essentially cinnamon buns. Usually eaten with a cup of coffee (Finns consume more coffee and perhaps more cinnamon buns than any other European nation). _Korvapuusti siginifica literalment orelles bufetejades, però són essencialment pastissets de canyella. En general, es mengen amb una tassa de cafè (els Finlandesos consumeixen més cafè i tal vegada més pastes de canyella que qualsevol altre país europeu).

Barcelona and Helsinki have two of the ten best-known skywheels around the world. The one in the Catalan capital is called Giradabo, and it is located in the Amusement Park on the Tibidabo mountain, and allows you to enjoy stunning views of the whole city from a height of more than 500 meters. It was built in 1953, although the one currently in operation is from 2014. _Barcelona i Hèlsinki tenen dues de les deu nòries considerades més espectaculars del món. La de la capital catalana es diu Giradabo, està ubicada al Parc d'Atraccions que hi ha a la muntanya del Tibidabo, i permet gaudir d'unes impressionants vistes de tota la ciutat des d'una alçada de més de 500 metres. Es va construir l'any 1953, tot i que la que hi ha actualment va començar a funcionar l'any 2014.

 

The same year the one in Helsinki was released. An attraction that is located in the Port of the Finnish capital and that allows you to enjoy spectacular views of the Kauppatori market, both the Uspenski and Tuomiokirkko cathedrals, and all the islands that surround the city. As it could not be otherwise in a country like Finland, the SkyWheel in Helsinki has a cabin with built-in sauna. _El mateix any es va estrenar la nòria d'Hèlsinki. Una atracció que s'ubica al Port de la capital finlandesa i que permet gaudir d'unes espectaculars vistes sobre el mercat de Kauppatori, les catedrals d'Uspenski i Tuomiokirkko, i de totes les illes que envolten la ciutat. Com no podia ser d'una altra manera en un país com Finlàndia, la SkyWheel d'Hèlsinki disposa d'una cabina amb sauna incorporada.

 

 

The three most spectacular skywheels in the world are in Las Vegas, Singapore and London. _Les tres nòries més espectaculars del món les trobem a Las Vegas, Singapur i Londres.

Today is Friday, and Fridays are a good day to travel! This time we will fly with Finnair, although we won't do do it to any of its destinies, but a trip to memories, to the history of this company so closely linked to Finland. As everyone who follows this blog will know, Finland celebrates within five days the 100 years of its independence. _Avui és divendres, i els divendres són un bon dia per a viatjar! Aquesta vegada farem un viatge amb Finnair, però no a cap de les seves moltes destianacions, sinó que farem un viatge al record, a la història d'aquesta companyia tan estretament lligada a Finlàndia. Com tots els que ens segui sabreu, Finlàndia celebra d'aquí a cinc dies els 100 anys de la seva independència.

During this winter, the airline will operate in more than 100 European destinations, more than 20 intercontinental routes and a significant increase in flights to Finnish Lapland this winter. And as you all know, Lapland is where Santa Claus lives, and also the elves (tontut) those who help Santa in the construction and distribution of toys around the world on Christmas Day. _Finnair celebra el centenari de Finlàndia just l'any en què arribarà al màxim històric de la seva expansió. Durant aquest hivern, l'aerolínia operarà a més de 100 destinacions europees, més de 20 rutes intercontinentals i un significatiu augment dels vols a la Lapònia finlandesa aquest hivern. Finnair, founded in 1923, is one of the most veteran airlines in the world. Its evolution has been intrinsically linked to that of Finland, from the first flight of Finnair that linked Helsinki and Talllinn transporting mail, until now. Juhannus takes place during the shortest night of the year, during the summer solstice (juhannusaato), today, because, mainly in the further north areas, the sun remains visible at midnight. It is truly the midnight sun! _A Finlàndia també se celebra de manera prou important la festivitat de Sant Joan. En diuen Juhannus, i té lloc durant la nit més curta de l'any, durant el solstici d'estiu (juhannusaato), avui, perquè, sobretot a les regions de més al nord... és quan el sol no arriba a pondre's mai. És, veritablement, el sol de mitjanit!

Everyone leaves to their summer cottages, 'mökki'. Although, increasingly, Juhannus is also held in major cities. Cooking or just relaxing and always drinking with friends or families. However, it is also traditional to bonfires at the sea and at lakes, 'kokko', which is then thrown into the water! _Tothom marxa cap a les seves cabanes d'estiu, les mökki. Tot i que, cada vegada més, també se celebra a les grans ciutats. Cuinar, relaxar-se i, sempre, beure, amb els amics o la família. De totes maneres, també és tradicional encendre fogueres a les vores del mar o dels llacs, kokko, que després es llancen a l'aigua!

In this video you may see a beautiful example of how we celebrate Midsummer Festival (Sant Joan) in Spain compared to those celebrations of the Nordic countries, like Juhannus in Finland! _Aquestes imatges del vídeo que ara veureu volen representar una mica com celebrem aquí, en alguns llocs de la península Ibèrica, la festa de Sant Joan... la festa del foc i de l'arribada de l'estiu, en comparació a les celebracions de Juhannus (midsommer) a Finlàndia i a la resta de països nòrdics!

Since March, Happy Guide Helsinki has opened a new tour of the city. Tom of Finland Experince Tour. And we did sign up for it! _Des del mes de març d'aquest any, Happy Guide Helsinki ha inaugurat un nou tour per la ciutat. Un nou tour que ens portarà a conèixer un dels personatges amb més ressò de la cultura gràfica i popular del segle XX a Finlàndia, i coneguda arreu del món, sobretot en l'àmbit cultural de la comunitat Gay: Tom of Finland; o, més ben dit, Touko Laaksonen. Tom of Finland Experience brings alive the streets once walked by Touko Laaksonen, more known for his international artist name, Tom of Finland, at a time when in some of the living and hidden layers of the city there could be found (in some times, clandestine and furtive) relationships between men! _Tom of Finland Experience dóna vida als carrers que en altres temps van veure caminar Touko Laaksonen, més conegut com a Tom of Finland, en un moment en què en alguna de les capes vives i amagades de la ciutat hi havia trobades (en algunes èpoques, clandestines i furtives) entre homes!

Touko Laaksonen's alias Tom of Finland has become an international gay culture icon during the years. Participants will get to know how for example a stamp decorated with his art became the most sold stamp ever in Finland? And also Touko the man: how life was very different for a gay man during the Second World War and decades after? This walk gets participants to places no one would have never imagined to have a secret meaning at all and that today they are completely alive spots of the daily life of the citizens of Helsinki. _L'àlies de Touko Laaksonen, Tom de Finlàndia, s'ha convertit en una icona de la cultura Gai internacional amb el pas del temps. Els participants de l'experiència tindran l'oportunitat de saber com, per exemple, segells decorats amb les seves obres s'han convertit en els segells més venuts mai a Finlàndia? I també Touko l'home: com de diferent era la vida per a un homosexual durant la Segona Guerra Mundial i durant moltes dècades després? Aquest passeig duu als participants a llocs on mai ningú hauria pensat que haguessin tingut una altra vida secreta i que avui són centres completament vitals de la vida diària dels ciutadans d'Hèlsinki.

 

Tom of Finland Experience starts with a multimedia show including videos and images of Tom / Touko and his years in Helsinki and with rising toast at Klaus K hotel where the experience starts for this unique liberal Finnish artist while admiring his work and life as audiovisual experience. You'll know there why this place has a meaning in Touko's life. After that, participants will walk the streets of Helsinki to see where Touko lived and visiting places once clandestine meeting places for gay community, now representing the accepting and liberal change in Finnish society. And in the end we give you a hot taste of Tom!  _Tom of Finland Experience comença amb un espectacle multimèdia incloent vídeos i imatges de Tom / Touko i els seus anys a Hèlsinki, i posteriorment amb un brindis a l'hotel Klaus K, perquè és un dels llocs relacionats en la vida del dibuixant. Ja us explicaran el per què. Després d'això, els participants caminaran pels carrers d'Hèlsinki i passaran per edificis on Touko va viure, o d'altres que una vegada van ser els llocs de reunió per a la comunitat gai clandestina, i que ara ja representen el canvi en l'acceptació i liberalització de la societat finlandesa.
