Today is the 468th anniversary of the city of Helsinki. Today is 'Helsinki Päivä'! _Avui és el 468 aniversari de la ciutat d'Hèlsinki. Així doncs, s'està cel·lebrant amb molta festa Helsinki Päivä!

Helsinki was established as a trading town by King Gustav I of Sweden in 1550 as the town of Helsingfors, which he intended to be a rival to the Hanseatic city of Reval (today known as Tallinn), on the mouth of the Vantaa River on the site of the medieval village of Forsby (today, Vanhakaupunki neighbourhood). Little came of the plans as Helsinki remained a tiny town plagued by poverty, wars, and diseases. In the 1640s, Helsinki was moved to its current location on the Vironniemi peninsula because of better harbour conditions, to boost the city commerce.  _Fundada el 1550 com una rival de la ciutat hanseàtica de Reval (avui Tallinn) pel rei Gustau I de Suècia, la ciutat d'Hèlsinki, va lluitar des dels primers temps. El jove assentament va ser assolat per la pobresa, les guerres i les malalties. A la dècada de 1640, Hèlsinki es va traslladar a la seva ubicació actual a la península Vironniemi, ja que les condicions portuàries eren millors per impulsar el comerç de la ciutat.

The plague of 1710 killed the greater part of the inhabitants of Helsinki. The construction of the naval fortress Sveaborg (In Finnish Viapori, today also Suomenlinna) in the 18th century helped improve Helsinki's status, but it was not until Russia defeated Sweden in the Finnish War and annexed Finland as the autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland in 1809 that the town began to develop into a substantial city. During the war, Russians besieged the Sveaborg fortress, and about one quarter of the town was destroyed in an 1808 fire. And you have already seen in our blog what kind o fo city it is today! _La pesta de 1710 va matar dos terços dels habitants d'Hèlsinki. Durant molt temps es va mantenir un petit poble costaner, eclipsada per la més floreixent del comerç en els centres de la regió bàltica. La construcció de Sveaborg (en finès Viapori, avui també Suomenlinna) fortalesa naval contribuir a millorar la seva situació, però no va ser fins que Rússia va derrotar Suècia en la guerra finlandesa i que s'adjunten a Finlàndia com el Gran Ducat autònom de Finlàndia, el 1809 Hèlsinki es va començar a desenvolupar en una gran ciutat. I ja heu vist al nostre bloc quin tipus de ciutat és avui dia!

Juhannus takes place during the shortest night of the year, during the summer solstice (juhannusaato), today, because, mainly in the further north areas, the sun remains visible at midnight. It is truly the midnight sun! _A Finlàndia també se celebra de manera prou important la festivitat de Sant Joan. En diuen Juhannus, i té lloc durant la nit més curta de l'any, durant el solstici d'estiu (juhannusaato), avui, perquè, sobretot a les regions de més al nord... és quan el sol no arriba a pondre's mai. És, veritablement, el sol de mitjanit!

Everyone leaves to their summer cottages, 'mökki'. Although, increasingly, Juhannus is also held in major cities. Cooking or just relaxing and always drinking with friends or families. However, it is also traditional to bonfires at the sea and at lakes, 'kokko', which is then thrown into the water! _Tothom marxa cap a les seves cabanes d'estiu, les mökki. Tot i que, cada vegada més, també se celebra a les grans ciutats. Cuinar, relaxar-se i, sempre, beure, amb els amics o la família. De totes maneres, també és tradicional encendre fogueres a les vores del mar o dels llacs, kokko, que després es llancen a l'aigua!

In this video you may see a beautiful example of how we celebrate Midsummer Festival (Sant Joan) in Spain compared to those celebrations of the Nordic countries, like Juhannus in Finland! _Aquestes imatges del vídeo que ara veureu volen representar una mica com celebrem aquí, en alguns llocs de la península Ibèrica, la festa de Sant Joan... la festa del foc i de l'arribada de l'estiu, en comparació a les celebracions de Juhannus (midsommer) a Finlàndia i a la resta de països nòrdics!

Beware of fireworks, and bonfires! On the contrary, you'll see fingers flying everywhere! Don't forget neither la 'Coca de Sant Joan' nor 'orxata'! _Compte amb els petards, i les fogueres! Si no... ja sabem què passa. Volen els dits pertot arreu! Ah... i que no falti la Coca de Sant Joan ni la orxata!

Summer in Finland started last days of May, although it starts officially with celebrations of 'Juhannus' (big parties will be held on saturday), and astronomically speaking, around 21 June. But it's quite hot here in Barcelona, so maybe these images of a coolest summer, such as that in Helsinki, will help us to bear it a little more. _L'estiu a Finlàndia va començar a finals de Maig, tot i que oficialment comença amb les celebracions de Juhannus (les celebracions principals es faran dissabte) i, astronòmicament parlant, al voltant del 21 de juny. Però aquí fa força calor, i potser les imatges d'un estiu de temperatures més agradables, com el d'Hèlsinki, ens ajudin a suportar-ho una mica millor.

According to our digital window to Helsinki, it had not rained in there for several days as it does today. Fortunately, the day of celebration for the acts of Helsinki Päivä they enjoyed quite a nice weather. _Ara feia força dies que la nostra finestra digital a Hèlsinki no ens mostra la ciutat grisa sota la pluja. Per sort, el dia de la seva celebració durant els actes de Helsinki Päivä, van gaudir d'un temps força radiant.

The Finns really, really like the sun. They are like lizards running out to it. A few days ago the run out on the street to eat all the delicatessen which were prepared for their fellow citizens. This weekend, on Saturday 28th, in Helsinki, they'll leave home with all obsolete devices that they have been gathering during the year and no longer makes service to sell to these same citizens. Siivouspäivä it is called (or Cleaning day). _Els finlandesos veuen una mica de sol i, com sargantanes, surten corrent a aprofitar-lo al màxim. Fa uns dies van sortir tots al carrer a menjar els platillus que havien preparat per als seus conciutadans. Aquest cap de setmana, el dissabte 28, a Hèlsinki, sortiran tots corrent de casa amb els trastos que han anat acumulant durant l'any i ja no els fa servei per a vendre'ls a aquests mateixos conciutadans. És el siivouspäivä (o dia de neteja).

The city becomes a great unprofessional showcase. The city becomes a big market of opportunities, and offers, and as required, of second-hand goods. If these are lucky, they'll get a recycled use. It is widely said... "a man's trash, becomes another's treasure...". We say that, of course, from the utmost respect. Let's be green! Long live the recycling and re-use! _La ciutat es converteix en un gran aparador no professional, en un gran mercat d'oportunitats, d'ofertes i, com s'exigeix, de productes de segona mà que, si hi ha sort, reciclaran el seu ús. Ja hi ha qui ho diu... la merda d'uns, es converteix en el tresor d'uns altres... Sempre parlem, és clar, des del màxim respecte. Siguem verds! Visca el reciclatge i el re-aprofitament!

AVUI m'agrada... una església abandonada d'Astúries reconvertida en skatepark.
What today we like most... is this old abandoned church in Asturias (Spain) transformed into a skatepark.

 

Originally designed by Asturian architect Manuel del Busto in 1912, the church of Santa Barbara in Llanera, Asturias, was abandoned for years and crumbling from neglect. Luckily, a group of enterprising individuals lead by a collective called the ‘Church Brigade,’ with help from online fundraising and Red Bull, the church was salvaged and turned into a public skate park dubbed 'Kaos Temple'. _Originalment dissenyada per l'arquitecte asturià Manuel del Busto l'any 1912, l'església de Santa Bàrbara a Llanera, Astúries, va quedar abandonada durant anys i s'enfonsava degut a la negligència. Per sort, un grup de persones emprenedores, dirigit per un col·lectiu anomenat la Church Brigade, amb l'ajuda i la recaptació de fons online i de Red Bull, l'església s'ha recuperat i convertit en un skatepark públic denominat Kaos Temple.

We used to travel on Fridays... and today also we will. Director Luke Shepard has visited 36 cities in 21 European countries to see the diversity and brilliance of its architecture. So many hours of video recording are summarized in a time-lapse video of about four minutes, 'Nightvision', which has been possible thanks to crowdfunding financing. _Habitualment els divendres hem anat de viatge... i avui també ho farem. De la mà del director Luke Shepard recorrerem 36 ciutats de 21 països d'Europa per veure la diversitat i l'excel·lència de la seva arquitectura. Tantes i tantes hores de gravació es resumeixen en un vídeo time-lapse de gairebé 4 minuts, Nightvision, que ha estat possible gràcies al crowdfunding.

As you can see, when driving through Lapland, you must share the road with other specimens... like reindeers. They are big and have no fear. Be careful and, do not run them over! They where living in there before! _Com podeu veure, quan conduiu per la Lapònia, heu de compartir la carretera amb d'altres especímens... com els rens. Són grossos i no tenen por dels cotxes. Anéu amb compte, i no els atropelleu! Ells hi eren abans!
