AVUI m'agrada... (tenint en compte que ja ha començat el compte enrere cap a Nadal) un element decoratiu de les festes anomenat himmeli.

What today I like most is something Finnish called himmeli.

'Himmel' is a highly valued and beloved Christmas decorations in Finland, made of straw tied straws. Made of hundreds or even thousands of pieces of straw. Exist in various shapes and sizes. Traditionally 'Himmel' hung above the dining table, where it remained until the summer solstice, to ensure that the rye harvest the following year were abundant. _El himmeli és una molt valorada i estimada decoració de Nadal a Finlàndia, feta de canyetes de palla lligades. Fetes de centenars, o fins i tot milers, de peces de palla. N'existeixen de diverses formes i mides. Tradicionalment el himmeli es penjava damunt de la taula del menjador, on s'hi quedaven fins al solstici d'estiu, per a garantir que la collita de sègol de l'any següent fos abundant.

Combines elements of geometry and architecture into graceful patterns and shadows. Although the root of the word “himmeli” is Germanic (in Swedish and German himmel means “sky” or “heaven”) and different versions of this straw mobile can be found in other Nordic countries, the 'himmeli' is considered the quintessential traditional Finnish Christmas decoration. _Formalment combina elements de la geometria i l'arquitectura en patrons i ombres gracioses. I encara que l'origen de la paraula himmeli és germànic (himmeli en suec i alemany significa cel), i les diferents versions d'aquest mòbil de palla es poden trobar en altres països nòrdics, el himmeli és considerat la quinta essència de les tradicions nadalenques a Finlàndia.

It is widely thought that best 'himmelis' are made out of rye, the grain with the longest and sturdiest stems. A well-kept 'himmeli' can last up to a hundred years. In modern interpretations, the materials vary from plywood to paper and even plastic straws. _Els millors himmelis estan fets de sègol, i ben guardat diuen que pot durar fins a cent anys. En les versions modernes, els materials varien des del contraxapat de paper a les palletes de plàstic.

Himmeli maker Eija Koski’s childhood memories go back to her aunt’s farmhouse in Finland’s Northern Savo region, where a himmeli was always on display for Christmas. “I remember how I used to stare at the himmeli slowly swaying with the draft while the adults were just talking,” says Koski. “I became enchanted by it!”. _Eija Koski, fabricant de himmelies, recorda la seva infància a la granja de la seva tia, a la regió nord de Savo, on sempre hi havia un himmeli per Nadal. Recordo que jo solia mirar el himmeli balancejant lentament, mentre que els adults estaven parlant, diu Koski. Em quedava encantada!

According to Koski, the 'himmeli' boom is part of the slow movement. “I think people are looking to reconnect with their heritage,” she says. “Artisanal handicrafts are becoming more popular.”  _Segons Koski, l'auge del himmeli forma part de les noves tendències slow movement. Crec que la gent està buscant per tornar a connectar amb la seva herència", diu ella. "L'artesania torna a ser cada vegada més popular.

It has just started what is called in Finland 'Kaamos', the Polar Night. For a couple of months, especially in the northern part of the country, in Lapland, there will not be light for about 51 days. This does not mean that the darkness is absolute because at noon there is always a slight twilight, always with the permission of the clouds. It is a difficult time for the physical and mental health of the people. _Tot just acaba de començar el que a Finlàndia reb el nom de Kaamos, la Nit polar. Durant un parell de mesos, sobretot a la part més septentrional del país, a la Lapònia, no es veurà el sol en gairebé 51 dies. Això no vol dir que l'obscuritat sigui absoluta perquè cap al migdia sempre hi ha un lleuger crepúscle, si els núvols ho permeten. És una època complicada per a la salut física i mental de la gent.

This is therefore a good time to see the famous Northern Lights and if you are lucky, listen to their sounds. _Aquest és, doncs, un bon moment per a poder observar les famoses Aurores Boreals i, si hi ha sort, escoltar-ne els seus sons.

The Christmas season begins in Helsinki when the lights are turned on along the traditional Christmas street Aleksanterinkatu for the 69th year in a row, which is going to take place next sunday, 26th november. _Les festes de Nadal comencen a Hèlsinki quan els llums s'encenen, des de fa 68 anys, a Aleksanterinkatu (l'arteria comercial principal de la ciutat).

The event begins at 2pm at Senate Square with a charity market where visitors can find Christmas treats, such as Christmas porridge, mulled wine and pastries. Santa Claus and Mayor Jussi Pajunen will arrive at Senate Square aboard a historic tram and switch on the Christmas lights at 4 pm. After that a Christmas Parade will proceed along the streets Aleksanterinkatu, Mannerheimintie and Pohjoisesplanadi, where visitors will have the chance to see Santa and enjoy the Christmas atmosphere. _Els actes comencen a les 14:00 a Senaatintorit amb un rastell solidari, on els visitants poden trobar dolços de Nadal i vi calent amb espècies. Santa Claus i l'alcalde Jussi Pajunen arribaran a Senaatintorit en un tramvia històric i encendran els llums de Nadal a les 4 pm. Després la desfilada de Nadal procedirà al llarg dels carrers Aleksanterinkatu, Mannerheimintie i Pohjoisesplanadi, on els visitants tindran l'oportunitat de veure a Santa i gaudir de l'ambient de Nadal.

The act of turning on Christmas lights in Barcelona will be held on Thursday 24 November in Las Ramblas, in order to pay homage to the victims of the terrorist attack of August 17, from 7 pm. Lighting will be open until 6 January. Christmas lights can be seen from that day until Epiphany on 6 January, from 6pm until midnight every day of the week, except on Friday and Saturday that will be open until 1 am. In addition, 24, 25 and 31 December, and 5 January, they will remain lit until 2 am. _L'acte d'encesa de l'enllumenat nadalenc a Barcelona se celebrarà el dijous 23 de novembre a la Rambla, per tal d'homenatjar les víctimes de l'atemptat del 17 d'agost, a partir de les 19 h. Els llums de Nadal es podran veure des del moment de l’encesa i fins al dia de Reis, el 6 de gener, de 18 a 0 h durant tots els dies de la setmana, amb excepció dels divendres i dissabtes, que estaran encesos una hora més, fins a la una de la matinada. Moventia, a company headquartered in Sant Cugat (Catalonia), through the CityBike Finland consortium, has been proclaimed this past October officially winner of the competition to manage the public bicycle service of the city of Espoo in Finland. _El grup amb seu a Sant Cugat Moventia, a través del consorci CityBike Finland, s'ha proclamat aquest passat mes d'octubre oficialment vencedor del concurs per gestionar el servei públic de bicicletes de la ciutat d’Espoo, a Finlàndia. 

Therefore, Moventia, a Catalan family company founded in 1923, specialized in mobility of people, is already managing a third public bicycle service in Europe, after the award of Paris last May and Helsinki in 2015. With a contract of 8 years, CityBike Finland will handle a public service with 700 bicycles and a total of 70 stations up to 2025, which can be rised up to 1050 and 85, respectively. _Així doncs, Moventia, empresa catalana familiar fundada l'any 1923 experta en mobilitat de persones, ja duu la gestió d’un tercer servei de bicicleta pública a Europa, després de l’adjudicació de París el passat mes de maig, i d’Hèlsinki al 2015. Amb un contracte a 8 anys, CityBike Finland gestionarà fins al 2025 un servei públic amb 700 bicicletes i un total de 70 estacions, que podran ampliar-se fins a 1050 i 85, respectivament.

Espoo, mirroring himself in the neighboring city of Helsinki, will have the same pioneering system that was settled in the Finnish capital two years ago, and has had an extraordinary reception. The entry into operation of the public bicycle service will take place on May 2, taking into account that the cycling season goes from May to October. _Espoo, emmirallant-se en la ciutat veïna d’Helsinki, comptarà amb el mateix sistema pioner que es va establir a la capital finlandesa fa dos anys, i que ha tingut una acollida extraordinària. L’entrada en funcionament del servei de bicicleta pública tindrà lloc el proper 2 de maig, tenint en compte que la temporada ciclista en aquesta població va de maig a octubre.

The proposal of CityBike Finland presents an offer of pioneering urban bicycles in technology and design, lightweight and resistant. Today is "The Castanyada". The Castanyada is a popular festival celebrated in Catalonia mainly on All Saints' Day. Like Halloween or the Celtic 'Samhain', its origins are in an ancient ritual festival of the dead. _Aquest cap de setmana passat hem viscut, novament, la castanyada. Tradicionalment, la nit del 31 d'octubre és fa la festa popular de la castanyada, i ja serveix de revetlla pel dia de Tots Sants, l'1 de novembre.

We'll find the origins of this celebration in ancient funeral rites, and we have to travel to the night of time to find out the original meaning when autumn was a time of death in nature, and it was thought that the gates of the underworld opened to allow contact between the living and the deads. _Les arrels d'aquesta festa tenen l'origen en antics rituals funeraris, i ens hem de perdre per la nit dels temps per trobar-ne el sentit primigeni, quan la tardor era un temps de mort per a la natura, i es pensava que les portes de l'altre món quedaven obertes per permetre el contacte entre els vius i els ja traspassats.

About the eleventh century, the celebration of 'All Saints' included November 1 and November 2, when we commemorate the faithful departed. But this second day has been lost in the calendars as a result of industrialization, that simplified annual festivities.  _Cap al segle XI, la festa de Tots Sants incloia el dia 1 de novembre i el dia 2 de novembre, quan es commemoraven els fidels difunts. Però aquest segon dia ja s'ha perdut en els calendaris que, fruit de la industrialització, van simplificar les festivitats anuals.

And what do we do to celebrate it? We cook chestnuts, which hopefully we roasted on the fire, accompanied by potatoes and 'panellets'... and a bit of muscat. The next day we visit the cemeteries. _I què fem per celebrar-ho? Mengem castanyes, que amb sort haurem torrat al foc, acompanyades de panellets i moniatos... i una mica de moscatell. L'endemà, anem a visitar els cementiris (potser això últim... ja no tant).

In Catalunya consists of a meal of chestnuts, panellets, sweet potato and preserved fruits, typically with moscatell to drink. Around the time of this celebration, it is common for street vendors to sell hot toasted chestnuts wrapped in newspaper. In many places, confectioners often organise raffles of chestnuts and preserved fruit. It seems that the tradition of eating these foods comes from the fact that during All Saints' night, the night before All Souls' Day in the Christian tradition, bell ringers would ring bells in commemoration of the dead into the early morning. Friends and relatives would help with this task, and everyone would eat these foods for sustenance. Other versions of the story state that the Castanyada originates at the end of the 18th century and comes from the old funeral meals, where other foods, such as vegetables and dried fruit were not served. The meal had the symbolic significance of acommunion with the souls of the departed: while the chestnuts were roasting, prayers would be said for the person who had just died. _Però... per què castanyes? Doncs perquè... simplement... és un dels últims fruits de la tardor. A més, en el ritus tradicional, l'àpat funerari constava de llegums i fruita seca, i els pans votius o panets, panellets, panetons. Mentre es torraven les castanyes, es resaven les tres parts del rosari pels difuns de la família. Hi ha qui diu que, el fet de menjar productes típicament energètics es deu al fet que, per Tots Sants, les campanes tocaven a morts la vígilia fins a la matinada... i no es podia defallir! 

'Panellets' are the traditional dessert of the All Saints holiday (Castanyada, in Catalonia)  together with chestnuts and sweet potatoes. 'Panellets' are often accompanied with a sweet wine, usually moscatell, mistela, vi de missa or vi ranci. 'Panellets' are small cakes or cookies in different shapes, mostly round, made mainly of marzipan. The most popular are the 'panellets' covered with pine nuts. _El panellets són  un producte de rebosteria casolana, fets amb ametlla, sucre i rovell d'ou, bàsicament. Poden anar coberts o no de pinyons i afegir altres components com el coco, la xocolata o d'altres. A mi... els que m'agraden més, són els de pinyons i els de coco (que procurem fer nosaltres, perquè és un producte molt car... de luxe, gairebé... i no ens queden gens malament)!

The festival is usually depicted with the figure of a castanyera: an old lady, dressed in peasant's clothing and wearing a headscarf, sat behind a table, roasting chestnuts for street sale. _Durant tots aquests dies de tardor i hivern, apareix pels carrers la tradicional figura de la castanyera, que ven les castanyes torrades i calentes i embolicades en una paperina de paper de diari. Es representa com una dona vella, vestida amb roba pobra d'abrigar i amb un mocador al cap, davant d'un torrador de castanyes.

Les castanyeres d'abans eren molt diferents de les d'avui. Vestien de manera pròpia. Duien unes faldilles de sargil molt amples i folrades, amb davantal de cànem i llana. Al cap duien una caputxa blanca de llana, molt llarga, que els arribava fins més avall de mitja faldilla. La duien lligada al coll i a la cintura. Cuien les castanyes en fogons de terrissa semblants a una copa, i així eren anomenats. Donaven vuit castanyes per un "quarto", uns tres cèntims actuals.

Les castanyeres cridaven... calentes i grosses; qui en vol, ara que fumen?... i els nens, tan simpàtics com sempre, responien... petites i dolentes; de les vuit, set de pudentes.

But this is how we celebrate it in Catalonia. Much of the other countries have adopted the British celebration Halloween (or All Hallows Eve). But this... here and now... it's up! We have our own traditions that we need to preserve and celebrate! Castanyera against Halloween! Castanyera forever! _Però tot això... és com ho fem a Catalunya. Gran part de la resta de països han anat adoptant la festa anglosaxona de Halloween (o All Hallows Eve). Però això... ara i aquí... no toca! Nosaltres tenim les nostres pròpies costums que hem de conservar i cel·lebrar! 

In Finland they don't have such traditions associated with All Saints (which they call Pyhäinpäivä (pyhä means holy). ... They only go and put candles on the graves of their dead relatives. Although, on All Saints Day (2th November, or marraskuu) shops are closed, and its holidays... but not in a special way. _A Finlàndia no tenen tantes tradicions com nosaltres relacionades amb Tots Sants (que ells en diuen Pyhäinpäivä (pyhä vol dir sant). Ells... simplement... es limiten a anar a posar espelmes a les tombes dels seus familiars morts. De totes maneres, el dia de Tots Sants... que ells sempre traspassen (entre el 31.10 i el 6.11, i aquest any cau en 2 de novembre, o marraskuu) és festa i les botigues estan tancades... però no ho celebren de cap manera especial.

Gradually, young people have also been adapting Halloween, but very sparingly. _Poc a poc, els joves també han anat adoptant Halloween, però encara és molt minoritari.

Today is Cinnamon Roll Day. It is unkown how exactly Cinnamon roll day began, but there is a popular Swedish festival called Kanelbullens Dag. Cinnamons rolls of all kinds are served. Some are made from different kinds of flour, some are glazed with various kinds of sugar or toppings, or mixed with several fruit fillings. In Finland they are called korvapuusti ("slap in the face"). _Avui és el dia del rotllet de canyella. Es desconeix exactament com va començar el dia del rotllo de canyella, però hi ha un festival suec popular anomenat Kanelbullens Dag. Aquests rotllos de canyella se serveixen de tota manera. Estan cuits amb diferents tipus de farina, amb diversos tipus de sucre o ingredients, o farcits amb diverses fruite. A Finlàndia se'n diuen korvapuusti ("bufetada a la cara").

An amateur archeologist found in Finland, in a very good state of conservation, a thousand-year-old sword, corresponding to the Viking era. _Un arqueòleg aficionat va trobar a Finlàndia, en un molt bon estat de conservació, una espasa mil·lenària, corresponent a l'època víking.

The discovery was made last spring in a grave explored by a man with a metal detector. The weapon would have been manufactured at the end of the Viking era, around the year 1000 of our era. A knife, a circular clasp and a pint of bone were found in the same place. _El descobriment va ser realitzat durant la primavera (boreal) passada en una tomba explorada per un home amb un detector de metalls. L'arma hauria estat fabricada a finals de l'etapa víking, al voltant de l'any 1000 de la nostra era. Un ganivet, un fermall circular i una pinta d'os van ser trobats en el mateix lloc. 

The sword will be exhibited at the National Museum of Helsinki in 2018. _L'espasa serà exposada al Museu Nacional d'Hèlsinki al 2018.
 

Although they are uncommon, this kind of discoveries occur from time to time. In Norway, at the beginning of September it was found in the mountainous area of Oppland (270 km north of Oslo) also a Viking sword, whose origin dates back to 850-950. _Encara que són poc comuns, aquesta classe de descobriments es produeixen de tant en tant. A Noruega, a principis de setembre va ser trobada a la regió muntanyosa de Oppland (270 km al nord d'Oslo) també una espasa víking, l'origen remuntaria als anys 850-950.

A recent study published in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology has released light on Viking societies, when a genetic test of some remains demonstrated that a famous warrior was actually a woman. "Already at the beginning of the Middle Ages, stories were reported about cruel viking women, who fought alongside men", according to the magazine. "Nevertheless, in the art and the poetry the women warriors have been generally classified like mythological phenomena", emphasizes the article. _Un recent estudi publicat a la revista científica American Journal of Physical Anthropology ha fet fora llum sobre les societats víkings, quan un test genètic d'unes restes va demostrar que un cèlebre guerrer era en realitat una dona. Ja al començament de l'Edat Mitjana, es coneixien relats sobre dones víkings cruels, que combatien al costat dels homes, segons la revista. No obstant això, en l'art i la poesia les dones guerreres han estat generalment classificades com a fenòmens mitològics, subratlla l'article.

Barcelona and Helsinki will be connected all year round thank to three airlines, thanks to VUELING's decision to set its route. A travel that until now was only during the summer season, since the route began to operate, four years ago. As of October 30, VUELING will maintain its connection between Barcelona and Helsinki with two weekly frequencies during the entire winter season. The flights will be operated on Mondays and Fridays, departing from Barcelona at 7.30 am and arriving in the capital of Finland at 12.40 local time. From Helsinki the exit will be at 13.20 and the landing in the Catalan capital at 16.20, local time. The companies Finnair and Norwegian are the other two companies that already connect, throughout the year, Barcelona and Helsinki. _Barcelona i Hèlsinki estaran connectades tot l'any per tres companyies aèries, gràcies a la decisió de VUELING de fer fixa la seva ruta. Un enllaç que fins ara feia només durant els mesos d'estiu, des de que va començar a operar la ruta, ara fa quatre anys. A partir del 30 d'octubre, VUELING mantindrà la seva connexió entre Barcelona i Hèlsinki amb dues freqüències setmanals durant tota la temporada d'hivern. Els vols operaran els dilluns i els divendres, amb sortida des de Barcelona a les 7.30 del matí i arribada a la capital de Finlàndia a les 12.40, hora local. Des de Hèlsinki la sortida serà a les 13.20 i l'aterratge a la capital catalana a les 16.20, hora local. Les companyies Finnair i Norwegian són les altres dues companyies que ja connecten, durant tot l'any, Barcelona i Hèlsinki.
