Yesterday was Alvar Aalto's birthday. Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto (pronounced [ˈhuɡo ˈɑlʋɑr ˈhenrik ˈɑːlto]; 3 February 1898 – 11 May 1976) was a Finnish architect and designer. His work includes architecture, furniture, textiles and glassware, as well as sculptures and paintings, though he never regarded himself as an artist, seeing painting and sculpture as "branches of the tree whose trunk is architecture."   _Ahir va ser l'aniversari del naixement del famós arquitecte finlandès Alvar Aalto. Alvar Aalto (Hugo Henrik Alvar Aalto. Kuortane, 3 de febrer de 1898 - Hèlsinki, 11 de maig de 1976) fou un dels mestres de l'Arquitectura Moderna. Al llarg de la seva vida desenvolupà una obra molt personal, ubicada dins el corrent de l'arquitectura orgànica i fortament vinculada a la seva Finlàndia natal. És considerat com el «pare de l'Arquitectura Moderna» a Escandinàvia. A més de l'arquitectura, la seva obra inclou el disseny de mobles i objectes de cristalleria.

These might be the 10 projects by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto which highlight the breadth of his built work. _Aquests podrien ser els 10 projectes del famós arquitecte finlandès Alvar Aalto que posarien en relleu l'amplitud de la seva obra construïda. 

Alvar Aalto was born in Alajärvi in central Finland and raised in Jyväskylä. Following the completion of his architectural studies at the Helsinki University of Technology he founded his own practice in 1923, based in Jyväskylä, and naming it Alvar Aalto, Architect and Monumental Artist. Although many of his early projects are characteristic examples of 'Nordic Classicism' the output of his practice would, following his marriage to fellow Architect Aino Marsio-Aalto (née Marsio), take on a Modernist aesthetic. From civic buildings to culture houses, university centers to churches, and one-off villas to student dormitories, the ten projects compiled here—spanning 1935 to 1978—celebrate the breadth of Aalto's œuvre. _Alvar Aalto va néixer a Alajärvi, al centre de Finlàndia, i es va criar a Jyväskylä. Després de la finalització dels seus estudis d'arquitectura a la Universitat de Tecnologia d'Hèlsinki va fundar el seu propi estudi el 1923, amb seu a Jyväskylä, i donant-li el nom d'Alvar Aalto, arquitecte i artista monumental. Tot i que molts dels seus primers projectes són exemples característics de 'Classicisme Nòrdic' un pas al costat en el seu exercici, arran del seu matrimoni amb la també arquitecte Aino Aalto-Marsio (de soltera Marsio), el va dur a adquirir una estètica modernista, des d'edificis civils a cases de cultura, centres universitaris i esglésies, i residències estudiants.

The span of his career, from the 1920s to the 1970s, is reflected in the styles of his work, ranging from Nordic Classicism of the early work, to a rational International Style Modernism during the 1930s to a more organic modernist style from the 1940s onwards. Typical for his entire career is a concern for design as a Gesamtkunstwerk, a total work of art, in which he – together with his first wife Aino Aalto – would design the building, and give special treatment to the interior surfaces, furniture, lamps and glassware. His furniture designs are considered Scandinavian Modern, in the sense of a concern for materials, especially wood, and simplification but also technical experimentation, which led him to receiving patents for various manufacturing processes, such as bent wood. The Alvar Aalto Museum, designed by Aalto himself, is located in what is regarded as his home city Jyväskylä. _La seva trajectòria, des dels anys vint fins als anys setanta, es reflecteix en els estils de la seva obra, que van des del classicisme nòrdic de l’obra primerenca, fins al modernisme d’estil internacional racional dels anys trenta i un estil modernista més orgànic  als anys quaranta. És habitual en tota la seva carrera trobar una preocupació pel disseny com a Gesamtkunstwerk, una obra d'art total, en la qual, junt amb la seva primera esposa Aino Aalto, dissenyaria l'edifici i donaria un tractament especial a les superfícies interiors, mobles, làmpades i cristalleria. Els seus dissenys de mobles es consideren part del moderns escandinaus, en el sentit d'una preocupació pels materials, especialment la fusta i per la simplificació, però també per experimentació de tècniques, que el van dur a elaborar patents per a diversos processos de fabricació, com la fusta doblada. El museu Alvar Aalto, dissenyat pel propi Aalto, es troba en el que es considera la seva ciutat natal, Jyväskylä.

A CASA NOSTRA hi ha... una estufa de pèl·lets!

What we do have at home... A stove of pellets!

 

This year's winter is having quite a few cool days, although we wanted to reinforce the heating system in our countryside house for some time now. We opted for biomass, for pellets. This allows us not only to opt for a more ecological heating system but also for the most warming feeling of the fire vision. Although we could not choose to install a traditional fireplace, the stoves of pellets are a similar resource, but even much more  cleaner. _L'hivern d'enguany està tenint alguns dies força freds, tot i que ja feia temps que volíem reforçar el sistema de calefacció a la nostra casa de la muntanya. Per complementar el sistema de calefacció per bomba de calor i tubs, vam optar per la biomassa, pels pèl·lets. Això ens permet no només apostar per un sistema més ecològic de calefacció sinó també pel punt més acollidor de la visió del foc. Tot i que no podíem optar per instal·lar una llar de foc tradicional, les estufes de pèl·lets són un recurs similar, però molt més net.

When we decided to buy a stove of pellets, in one of the stores where we went they had this brand: Heimdallstove. And among the models of the brand, which suited better for the features of our place,  one called Vantaa. At first we did not realise, but when I got home with a catalog to think about it, I noticed it was a name that was very familiar to me, as well as some of the names of the other models. And of course! Vantaa is the name of a near town of Helsinki, Finland. In fact, this is where the airport is. And the other models, too. Loppi, Halkia, Lahti, Kolari. And the founder of the company, Robert Heimdall, was born in 1961 in Savukoski, Finland. Later the family of Robert Heimdall emigrated to Barcelona. After years studying engineering and design, working in different companies, Robert Heimdall and his team create their own range of stoves of pellets. Heimdallstove was born. _Quan vam decidir comprar una estufa de pèl·lets, en una de les botigues on vam anar tenien una marca concreta: Heimdallstove. I d'entre els models de la marca, la que ens anava millor per les carcaterístiques del nostre espai, Vantaa. En un primer moment no hi vam caure, però en arribar a casa amb un catàleg per poder pensar-nos-ho, em vaig adonar que era un nom que m'era molt famíliar, així com alguns dels noms dels altres models. I és clar! Vantaa és el nom d'una població veïna d'Hèlsinki, a Finlàndia. De fet, és on hi ha l'aeroport. I els altres models, també. Loppi, Halkia, Lahti, Kolari. I el fundador de l'empresa, Robert Heimdall, va néixer el 1961 a Savukoski, a Finlàndia. Posteriorment la família de Robert Heimdall va emigrar a Barcelona. Després d'anys estudiant enginyeria i disseny, col·laborant en diferents empreses avui Robert Heimdall i el seu equip creen la seva pròpia gamma d'estufes de pèl·let. Neix Heimdallstove.

 

The Robot Design

So much chance could not be! A stove, we, Finland, ... it had to be ours. And so we did. We liked the design, we liked the benefits, we liked the name! It is a compact stove. Very functional, easy to use and programming. Ideal for small places or areas of mild winters. Equipped with a net glass system. Silent and with great autonomy. _Tanta casualitat no podia ser! Una estufa, nosaltres, Finlàndia, ... havia de ser nostra. I així ho vam fer. Ens agradava el disseny, ens agradaven les prestacions, ens agradava el nom! És una estufa compacta. Molt funcional, de fàcil maneig i programació. Ideal per espais petits o zones d'hiverns suaus. Equipada amb sistema de vidre net. Silenciosa i amb gran autonomia.

Pellet fuels (or pellets) are biofuels made from compressed organic matter or biomass. Pellets can be made from any one of five general categories of biomass: industrial waste and co-products, food waste, agricultural residues, energy crops, and virgin lumber. Wood pellets are the most common type of pellet fuel and are generally made from compacted sawdust and related industrial wastes from the milling of lumber, manufacture of wood products and furniture, and construction. In Catalonia, the crisis increased the consumption of wood and its derivatives to heat up. From 2011 to 2012, the sale of pellets grew by 50%. According to the Spanish Association of Energy Valorisation of Biomass (Avebiom) calculates that heating with pellets and chips reduces the energy bill between 40 and 80%. _El pèl·let més sovint utilitzat al plural pèl·lets és un tipus de combustible granulat aglomerat a base de biomassa, produïts a partir de residus forestals, de residus de la indústria de la fusta o agroalimentària així com de plantes anuals cultivats per a la bioenergia. La paraula va derivar-se de l'anglès 'pellet', que del seu costat prové del francès 'pelote' (pilota), petita bola esfèrica o ovoide. A Catalunya, la crisi va fer créixer el consum de llenya i dels seus derivats per a escalfar. De 2011 a 2012, la venda de pèl·lets va créixer de 50%. L'Associació Espanyola de Valorització Energètica de la Biomassa calcula que escalfar-se amb pèl·lets i estelles disminueix la factura energètica entre el 40 i el 80%.

The urban event Lux Helsinki offers experiences for all the senses during the darkest time of the year. Visually spectacular light installations have enticed people to spend time in the wintry outdoors of Helsinki. _La filosofia inicial de Lux Helsinki és la de dur llum en els dies més foscos de l'any. A  més, és una bona manera de fer sortir la gent al carrer en una època tan freda! 

"The 10th annual Lux Helsinki light festival will take place from Saturday 6 January to Wednesday 10 January 2018. Lux Helsinki is illuminated with brilliant light installations at the impressive district of Kaartinkaupunki. "The streets, squares and buildings will be momentarily take on new forms as the festival breathes mew life into the wintry city" (Ilkka Paloniemi, artistic director). The starting point and the first artwork are located in Esplanade Park, behind Svenska Teatern. _El 10è festival anual de llum Lux Hèlsinki tindrà lloc des del dissabte 6 de gener al dimecres 10 de gener de 2018. Lux Hèlsinki ha il·luminat edificis històrics del centre de la ciutat, sobretot del districte de Kaartinkaupunki. La ruta d'enguany surt del parc d'Esplanadi, darrere del Svenska Teatern. "Els carrers, les places i els edificis adoptaran noves formes durant el temps que el Festival insufli nova vida a la ciutat hivernal" (Ilkka Paloniemi, director artístic).

Today is Friday, and Fridays are a good day to travel! This time we will fly with Finnair, although we won't do do it to any of its destinies, but a trip to memories, to the history of this company so closely linked to Finland. As everyone who follows this blog will know, Finland celebrates within five days the 100 years of its independence. _Avui és divendres, i els divendres són un bon dia per a viatjar! Aquesta vegada farem un viatge amb Finnair, però no a cap de les seves moltes destianacions, sinó que farem un viatge al record, a la història d'aquesta companyia tan estretament lligada a Finlàndia. Com tots els que ens segui sabreu, Finlàndia celebra d'aquí a cinc dies els 100 anys de la seva independència.

And as you all know, Lapland is where Santa Claus lives, and also the elves (tontut) those who help Santa in the construction and distribution of toys around the world on Christmas Day. _Finnair celebra el centenari de Finlàndia just l'any en què arribarà al màxim històric de la seva expansió. Durant aquest hivern, l'aerolínia operarà a més de 100 destinacions europees, més de 20 rutes intercontinentals i un significatiu augment dels vols a la Lapònia finlandesa aquest hivern. Finnair, founded in 1923, is one of the most veteran airlines in the world. Its evolution has been intrinsically linked to that of Finland, from the first flight of Finnair that linked Helsinki and Talllinn transporting mail, until now. Since March, Happy Guide Helsinki has opened a new tour of the city. A new tour that will bring us to know one of the most echoed people in the graphic and popular culture of the twentieth century in Finland, and known throughout the world, especially in the Gay community cultural life: Tom of Finland; or, actually, Touko Laaksonen. Tom of Finland Experince Tour. And we did sign up for it! _Des del mes de març d'aquest any, Happy Guide Helsinki ha inaugurat un nou tour per la ciutat. Un nou tour que ens portarà a conèixer un dels personatges amb més ressò de la cultura gràfica i popular del segle XX a Finlàndia, i coneguda arreu del món, sobretot en l'àmbit cultural de la comunitat Gay: Tom of Finland; o, més ben dit, Touko Laaksonen. Tom of Finland Experience brings alive the streets once walked by Touko Laaksonen, more known for his international artist name, Tom of Finland, at a time when in some of the living and hidden layers of the city there could be found (in some times, clandestine and furtive) relationships between men! _Tom of Finland Experience dóna vida als carrers que en altres temps van veure caminar Touko Laaksonen, més conegut com a Tom of Finland, en un moment en què en alguna de les capes vives i amagades de la ciutat hi havia trobades (en algunes èpoques, clandestines i furtives) entre homes!

Touko Laaksonen's alias Tom of Finland has become an international gay culture icon during the years. Participants will get to know how for example a stamp decorated with his art became the most sold stamp ever in Finland? And also Touko the man: how life was very different for a gay man during the Second World War and decades after? This walk gets participants to places no one would have never imagined to have a secret meaning at all and that today they are completely alive spots of the daily life of the citizens of Helsinki. _L'àlies de Touko Laaksonen, Tom de Finlàndia, s'ha convertit en una icona de la cultura Gai internacional amb el pas del temps. Els participants de l'experiència tindran l'oportunitat de saber com, per exemple, segells decorats amb les seves obres s'han convertit en els segells més venuts mai a Finlàndia? I també Touko l'home: com de diferent era la vida per a un homosexual durant la Segona Guerra Mundial i durant moltes dècades després? Aquest passeig duu als participants a llocs on mai ningú hauria pensat que haguessin tingut una altra vida secreta i que avui són centres completament vitals de la vida diària dels ciutadans d'Hèlsinki.

 

Tom of Finland Experience starts with a multimedia show including videos and images of Tom / Touko and his years in Helsinki and with rising toast at Klaus K hotel where the experience starts for this unique liberal Finnish artist while admiring his work and life as audiovisual experience. You'll know there why this place has a meaning in Touko's life. After that, participants will walk the streets of Helsinki to see where Touko lived and visiting places once clandestine meeting places for gay community, now representing the accepting and liberal change in Finnish society. And in the end we give you a hot taste of Tom!  _Tom of Finland Experience comença amb un espectacle multimèdia incloent vídeos i imatges de Tom / Touko i els seus anys a Hèlsinki, i posteriorment amb un brindis a l'hotel Klaus K, perquè és un dels llocs relacionats en la vida del dibuixant. Ja us explicaran el per què. Després d'això, els participants caminaran pels carrers d'Hèlsinki i passaran per edificis on Touko va viure, o d'altres que una vegada van ser els llocs de reunió per a la comunitat gai clandestina, i que ara ja representen el canvi en l'acceptació i liberalització de la societat finlandesa.

Suomenlinna always worth a visit! _Suomenlinna sempre val una visita!

Suomenlinna is like a big park where is always a good place to get back, walk, and in a sunny day organize a picnic or any outdoor activity with family or friends. _Per moltes i moltes vegades que hi hagis anat, sempre és un bon lloc per a tornar-hi, fer-hi una volta, i aprofitar un bon dia de sol per organitzar-hi un pícnic, o una sessió de jocs a l'aire lliure amb la família o els amics.

On a very hot day, those that even Finland has, the brave ones shall soak up the small beach in Susisaari, one of the islands of the sea-fortress.  Some people, like children, who always have their 'thermostat' regulated differently, usually get into the water without caring the cold! _En un dia ben calurós, que també n'hi ha a Finlàndia, fins i tot un pot fer el valent i intentar remullar-se a la platgeta que hi ha a Susisaari, una de les illes que conformen la fortalesa. Hi ha qui, com els nens, té el termostat corporal regulat d'una altra manera, i s'hi fica faci el temps que faci... Quin fred!

Built on a cluster of rocky skerries, the fortress consists of an irregular network of bastions. Suomenlinna has played a key role in many turning points in Finland’s history. It has been the property of three sovereign states. The majority of its buildings date from the late 18th century, the end of the Swedish era. From the early 19th century to the early 20th century, Suomenlinna – then known as Viapori – was part of Russia along with the rest of Finland. Russian-era Viapori was a lively garrison town. After Finland gained her independence, Suomenlinna became home to a coastal artillery regiment, a submarine base and the Valmet shipyard, where ships were built after the Second World War for Finland’s war reparations. _Suomenlinna, recorde'm-ho, és una fortalesa sobre sis illes, amb una xarxa irregular de bastions, Patrimoni de la Humanitat de la UNESCO des del 1991, construida el 1748 per Suècia com a protecció contra l'expansió de Rússia, tot i que durant la guerra finlandesa la fortalesa es va rendir l'any 1809 sense oposar resistència, cosa que va permetre la ràpida ocupació de Finlàndia. El 1918, després de la independència del país l'any 1917, el nom va canviar de Sveaborg (en suec) o Viapori (en rus) a Suomenlinna (Castell de Finlàndia) per motius patriòtics i nacionalistes, època en què es converteix en la seu d'un regiment d'artilleria costanera, una base de submarins i la drassana Valmet, on es construïen els vaixells després de la Segona Guerra Mundial per a les reparacions de guerra de Finlàndia. 

The fortress was handed over to civilian administration by the military in 1973 with the exception of Pikku Mustasaari island, where the Naval Academy is still located. The Finnish customs authorities have an office on the islands, and Suomenlinna also houses the Suomenlinna prison. A substantial part of the repairs to the walls, ramparts and buildings are carried out by convicts. _L'any 1973 la fortalesa és cedida a l'adminsitració civil, a excepció de l'illa Pikku Mustasaari on encara hi ha l'Acadèmia Naval. Les autoritats aduaneres finlandeses encara hi mantenen una oficina, i també hi ha la presó de Suomenlinna, els reclusos de la qual s'encarreguen de la reparació i adequació dels antics murs i edificis.

The old buildings are still in everyday use as housing (There are about 900 permanent inhabitants on the islands), working space (350 people work there year round), maintenance facilities and visitor service facilities. There is a continuous building repair programme going on. The restoration of fortifications and old buildings requires considerable expertise. The 18th-century dry dock on Susisaari island is still used as a winter storage and repair facility for old wooden sailboats. _Els vells edificis serveixen de vivendes (hi ha uns 900 habitants permanents), espais de treball (unes 350 persones),  espais de manteniment, espais de lleure... Fins i tot,  el dic sec del segle 18 a l'illa de Susisaari encara s'utilitza com a espai d'emmagatzematge d'hivern i taller de reparació de vells velers de fusta. 

The natural environment on Suomenlinna is a mixture of indigenous Finnish archipelago ecosystems and centuries of horticulture. The two-kilometer crossing with ferry from Market Square takes only about 15 to 20 minutes. _S'hi arriba amb el ferri que surt de la Plaça del Mercat, i la seva durada és només d'uns 15 0 20 minuts.

The site is more than a museum, however, but a living district of Helsinki with 800 inhabitants and 500 jobs. Heikkinen & Kangasaho’s proposal was chosen above 157 others in an international competition calling for a new housing scheme at Suomenlinna. The world heritage site is being developed into a museum area, tourist destination, and recreational hub, whilst also functioning as an active, functional neighborhood for Helsinki. The competition brief sought a high quality, modern yet sensitive addition to Suomenlinna’s historic, fortified landscape. _El lloc, però, és més que un museu, és un barri habitable d'Hèlsinki, amb 800 habitants i 500 llocs de treball. La proposta arquitectònica d'Heikkinen & Kangasaho va ser elegit d'entre d'altres 157 en una competició internacional per a un nou conjunt d'habitatges a Suomenlinna. Aquest patrimoni de la humanitat és una rica zona zona de museus, destinació turística, i centre recreatiu, mentre que també funciona com un barri actiu i funcional per a Hèlsinki. El programa del concurs buscava alta qualitat, i una moderna sensibilitat envers aquest paisatge històric de la fortificació de Suomenlinna.

Heikkinen & Kangasaho’s scheme consists of two buildings, each containing three apartments. The buildings strike a simple, restrained character, with pitched roofs and regular fenestration. Meanwhile, the massing is more complex – a sharp, jagged profile with outlook in every direction, echoing the defensive ambiance of its environment. Underneath the charred timber façade, each apartment room is dual aspect, embracing views of both the seaside and Suomenlinna’s historic surroundings. Who's gonna buy one of them? _L'esquema de Heikkinen & Kangasaho consta de dos edificis, cadascun amb tres apartaments. Els edificis són simples, amb teulades inclinades i finestres regulars. D'altra banda, el conjunt és més és més complex: un perfil afilat, irregular amb perspectiva en totes les direccions, fent ressò de l'ambient defensiva del seu entorn. Per sota de la façana de fusta carbonitzada, cada estança gaudeix vistes tant del mar i de l'entorn històric de Suomenlinna. Qui en vol una?

Nokia 3310 will be in stores in Spain next week. HMD Global Finland has confirmed that the iconic device can be purchased at specialty stores from Wednesday 24 May. _El Nokia 3310 es podrà comprar a Espanya la setmana que ve. La finlandesa HMD Global ha confirmat que l'icònic dispositiu es podrà adquirir a les botigues especialitzades a partir del dimecres 24 de maig.

This is the new Nokia 3310, a smartphone 'as in the old days'. The device is available in four colors - red and yellow glossy, blue and dark, gray finish, and will cost 49 euros. _Així és el nou Nokia 3310, un smartphone a l'antiga. El dispositiu està disponible en quatre colors - vermell i groc en acabat brillant, i blau fosc i gris, en acabat mat- i té un cost de 49 euros.

The 3310 has a camera on its back (only 2MP) and weighs less than its predecessor (80 grams, compared to 133 the previous model). The screen is a small color, 2.4 inches (and a resolution of 240x230) and has interchangeable faceplates. It has about 22 hours of battery life and connects with the network 2,5G. It is not clear whether they can use WhatsApp. Game features Snake and original Nokia tune. _El 3310 compta amb una càmera al darrere (de només 2MP) i pesa menys que el seu antecessor (80 grams, respecte als 133 del model anterior).  La pantalla és de color (petita, de 2,4 polzades i una resolució de 240x230) i disposa de carcasses intercanviables. Compta amb prop de 22 hores d'autonomia i es connecta amb la xarxa 2,5G. No està molt clar si es podrà utilitzar WhatsApp. Disposa del joc Snake i la sintonia original de Nokia.
