Hyvää tiistaita (dimarts_tuesday) kaikille!

Avui viatjarem fins a la localitat finlandesa de Vantaa, al nord d'Hèlsinki, on hi ha l'aeroport de la capital de Finlàndia. Allà hi trobem la Pyhän Laurin kappeli (capella de Sant Llorenç).

Dissenyada per Avanto Architects (dels que ja en trobareu al nostre blog dues obres més a Finlàndia... aquesta... i aquesta...) i construida en un important i antic emplaçament històric de Vantaa,  va ser consagrada l'any 2010. Avanto Architects (see more here and here) won an open architectural competition for Chapel of St.Lawrence in 2003 and the building was consecrated in August 2010. The site is situated in an important and ancient historical setting in Vantaa.

L'edifici conjuga elements diferents dels voltants sense predominar al seu entorn, i acompanya l'antiga església medieval de pedra. Els materials i la seva volumetria, doncs, són coherents amb les construccions properes, utilitzant el maó, la pedra natural, la malla i la fulla de coure patinada. The chapel links disparate elements in the surroundings without appearing as a distinct building mass, leaving the old medieval stone church and bellcote to dominate the village milieu. The massing and materials are in response to existing surroundings, with use of rendered brickwork, natural stone, patinated copper sheet and mesh.

El disseny de l'edifici va venir marcat, sobretot, per la voluntat d'oferir un enterrament digne, i els desplaçaments d'una sala a una altra interactuen amb els canvis en les característiques espaials i d'il·luminació. Giving peace and dignity to the funeral ceremony has been of primary importance in the planning of the building, and movement from one room to another is highlighted with a change of lighting and spatial characteristics.

Polku, o camí en finès, era el tema proposat per al concurs. El camí de l'home des de la seva representació mortal a l'inmoratilitat de l'esperit. The theme of the proposal, ”polku” (in Finnish) or ”path”, portrays man’s journey from mortality to eternity.

Els patis es converteixen en passos per a la cerimònia, i un mur final guia les mirades dels assistents al funeral cap a la llum. Courtyards function as passages to further ceremonial stages, a wall turns the onlookers gaze towards the light.
