El sol de mitjanit és un fenomen que es produeix a certes parts del planeta, entre els cercles polars i els pols, que consisteix en què el Sol es visible les 24 hores del dia, durant uns dies o mesos al voltant del solstici d'estiu. L'explicació està en la inclinació de la Terra.
The midnight sun is a natural phenomenon occurring in summer months at places north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle where the sun remains visible at the local midnight. El número de dies a l'any amb sol de mitjanit és major com més a prop dels pols s'està. La cuarta part del territori finlandès (la Lapònia, per exemple), es troba al nord del cercle polar àrtic, i en el punt més septentrional del país, el Sol no es pon durant 73 dies a l'estiu.

Tots aquells punts geogràfics 60º al sud del cercle àrtic, o nord del cercle antàrtic, experimenten el que se'n diu nits blanques. Es tracta d'aquelles setmanes al voltant del solstici d'estiu, per Sant Joan, més o menys, en les regions polars, en què l'obscuritat, un cop s'ha post el sol, mai és completa i el crepuscle dura tota la nit. Juhannus, com és diu en finlandès la cel·lebració del solstici d'estiu! Això és el que podem trobar, per exemple, a Hèlsinki.
